Maybe the most popular reason is that you're having it insured. Let's face it: we're talking about small items and high value - sometimes these things get lost or damaged. If a piece is appraised beforehand, you'll have a much easier time replacing it.

If the piece is already lost, a retro-hypothetical appraisal can help, too. Although it's by nature less accurate (since the piece isn't present), we can get a basic idea of what your jewelry was worth. Any information or photographs you have of the pieces are a big help.
